In September 1998, Hurricane Georges swept across the Caribbean Sea, causing widespread devastation throughout the region, including the famous Chateau de la Fuente farm in the Dominican Republic, where the highly prized wrapper leaves for Fuente Fuente OpusX cigars are grown and harvested. Two years later, the devastation caused by the storm resulted in a shortage of Fuente Fuente OpusX wrapper leaves. Rather than halt production, Carlos Fuente, Jr. ordered the use of a different wrapper leaf: aged Connecticut Broadleaf.
The Fuente family has once again managed to turn tragedy into triumph, and so the Arturo Fuente Anejo cigar was born. Anejo, one of the rarest cigars in the world, is rolled using the finest Dominican filler and binder from Chateau de la Fuente, to which is then added a maduro wrapper aged in cognac barrels. This combination imparts a rich, spicy and subtly sweet flavour to the smoke, whilst the unique ageing process gives the cigar its unmistakable character.
