Cohiba is the most prestigious brand in the world of cigars. It was produced in 1966 for President Fidel Castro at the secret – though now world-famous – El Laguito factory. For many years, it was intended solely as a gift for members of the government, foreign diplomats and heads of state. Since 1982, Cohiba has also been available on the open market in limited quantities.
The name derives from an ancient indigenous term used by the Taíno people and refers to a bundle of tobacco leaves – the oldest known form of cigar, which was smoked by the indigenous people at the time of Christopher Columbus. The leaves used in production are the ‘cream of the crop’ from the five most fertile lowlands in the San Juan y Martínez and San Luis areas of the Vuelta Abajo region.
Cohiba is the only cigar brand in which two of the three types of leaf used in production – seco and ligero – are fermented three times in barrels. This special process gives the brand its unique aroma and flavour. All vitolas are produced exclusively by hand.
Flavour profile: flavours and aromas of herbs, cocoa and coffee. Its flavour is very distinctive and delicate.
